"The place for Land Rover Enthusiasts”

Now imagine yourself 20 years old and in possession of a 2003 luxury SUV. You may be inclined to wax it daily and possibly even put some big flashy chrome rims on it and 2, 15 inch kickers in the back. Perhaps, but not if you’re Bobby Appleby. This entrepreneurial young man made up his mind to buy some 33 inch Mickey Thompson tyres and a 4 in lift kit to make them fit.

I can assure you that his vehicle has been tried and

tested and never found wanting. LR Offroad joined Mr. Appleby one fine evening for a trip through the forest. Snaking it’s way through nearly thousands of acres of land the “1000 acre forest” can be found in Westbrook, CT just minutes off I-95.

We set a blaze on our journey at about 10:00 pm with Hella’s and recovery gear in full swing. It wasn’t before I discovered the improvements that Land Rover had made on it’s series II Discovery. From the cock pit of my 96 Disco I found Bobby fighting his way to the top of several small hill climbs and even challenging the face of a 50 degree steep. Bobby’s 03 disco made it onto the step face without and issue but he seemed hardly amused by what lay at the top. So backing down from the steep we were on our way. Myself still amazed by what

This 2003 Disco 2 boasts a 4 in lift and 33’ Mickey Thompson tires!

The owners ride! Boasts a 2 in Old Man Emu lift with 31.5’ Trxus M/T, skid plate and ARB Bull Bar!

Exciting Rover spotting! One of our reader’s from Connecticut sent us a photo of this old military Rover they saw in an old yard! Keep sending us those photo’s! We love it!

My eyes just saw. Bobby promised me that is was about to get a lot better so my hands gripped my wheel a little tighter and a silent prayer ushered forth from my lips.

Before I knew it we were descending off the face of the earth. My Disco I brakes were squealing and my 32 in tires skidding, while Bobby takes it all in stride. He watched from the bottom as my rear wheels fully articulated, and a few curse words may have slipped from my mouth as I thought death was just around the corner. At the bottom Bobby greeted me

with a smile and a smirk that let me know something big was about to happen.

Sure enough just moments away was the mud pit I had been waiting for. Swampy and damp with overgrown g rass on either side Bobby warned me to stay to the side because I would be sure to find body damage in the middle. Unknowingly and slightly defensively I assured him that I would simply follow his lead through the pit. With a smile on his Bobby lifted himself into his car and began his first pass at the pit. Heading straight for the middle and crawling at a minimal pace he was set for the battle of a life time

Only 5 feet in an Bobby was sinking out of site. Punching his accelerator and jolting in and out of reverse and drive I was ready to see some U-joints flying through the air any second.  Amazingly his car just wouldn’t quit. Every time I looked up he seemed to be a few inches further somehow navigating his way through the large rocks that laid ready to bust a side panel any second.

A few minutes had passed and Bobby’s door flung open, he was laughing then hollered out “I’m not even in 4-low!” “Are you kidding me” I thought to myself, “Not even in low range.” I’ll tell you this much no one takes a Chevy or Ford or Toyota into that pit to do battle and makes it as far as he did in 4-High.

Before I could stop laughing Bobby was engaged in a 4-Low battle to pass over the hill that would lead him to higher, dry ground. I then slowly stepped into my old Disco I and passed along the side of the pit facing my fair share of battling, but nothing compared to the royal romp Bobby had just successfully completed. Since that day there is no doubt in my mind that Land Rover is THE BEST 4X4 BY FAR!
